The first step in creating a great skin care regime is to know your skin type. The main ones are as follows:

Normal skin – This is the most desired skin type. Normal skin tends to be ‘smooth’ and ‘evenly toned’ in texture. The balance between oil and moisture is consistent, leaving the skin with a natural glow!

Oily Skin – The skin appears shiny and may feel greasy. Oily skin tends to be more prone to acne and blemishes.

Dry Skin – This skin type lacks moisture and natural oil.

Sensitive skin – Can be dry, oily or combination. In cases where the skin is extremely sensitive, it is wise to consultant with a Dermatologist (skin care specialist).

Combination skin – This is where the skin consists of different skin types in different areas of the face. For example, the skin may be oily along the T zone and yet dry in other areas.

Cleansers

A cleanser removes make-up, dead skin cells, oil, dirt and other types of pollutants from the face. If you have dry skin, it is advisable to purchase cleansers which are more moisturising and thick facial washes for oily skin.   If you have sensitive skin, it would be best to try and avoid cleansers which contain harsh ingredients such as acids or fragrances.

How do you cleanse?

  • Wet your face with warm water
  • Apply the cleanser to your skin in a circular motion. Keep massaging in the circular motion for thirty seconds to a minute
  • Rinse with warm water and generally pat dry with a towel

How often should you cleanse?

There is no set rule how often you should cleanse your face. Factors can be dependent on your skin type and activities conducted throughout the day However, it is recommended to cleanse at least once a day.

Toners

Toners are used after cleansing to remove any traces of dirt and/or make up. The use of toners have various benefits:

  • Toners can shrink pores
  • Toners helps to restore the pH balance quickly
  • Toners can help tighten cell gaps after cleansing
  • Toners can help to bind moisture to the skin
  • Toners refreshes the skin!

How do you apply the toner to your skin?

  • Apply a small amount of the toner onto a cotton ball or pad
  • Move the cotton ball or pad gently in small circles across your face (avoid the eyes and mouth)
  • Repeat the process with a fresh cotton ball or pad until you no longer see dirt on the cotton ball.
  • Wait at least a minute for the toner to dry on your face. Toners are generally not washed off the face. Afterwards, you can add a moisturiser to the face.

Moisturisers

A moisturiser is a combination of naturally derived oil, cream and plant extracts for application on the face and body. These are enriched in nutritional elements that are required to keep the skin healthy and glowing. To sum up, moisturisers keeps the skin soft, smooth and hydrated!

What moisturisers are suitable for your skin type?

Oily skin – Try an oil free moisturiser

Sensitive skin – Try a gentle product which is oil free and hypo-allergenic

Dry skin – A moisturiser which is rich in essential oils to soothe the skin

Normal skin – A general moisturiser

Combination skin – It is advised to try a heavier cream on cheeks and a lighter, oil-free formula on the T-zone.

Face Masks

Face masks are great for absorbing any excess oil and refining larger pores. Did you know that face masks can be worn at night?? Face masks can also be used before taking a bath.

Face masks can be made at home with natural ingredients from your own kitchen!! A face mask generally only takes a few minutes to apply. Wait for up to 20 minutes and simply wash the mask of the skin.

Benefits of using a face mask:

  • Refines skin pores
  • Increases hydration
  • Can create a softer and smoother skin texture

It is advised to apply a face mask to the skin at least once a week.

Exfoliator

Exfoliators are very important as part of a good skin care regime as the process helps to detoxify the skin, improve blood circulation and decrease the dark circles under the eyes. It is advised to apply an exfoliator to your skin on a weekly basis.
